Tennis on clay: what your socks need when you slide

Tennis on clay: what your socks need when you slide

Clay season changes the game. The ball sits up, rallies get longer, and you start moving differently: you slide into your shots.

Your feet feel that change straight away. Here is what clay asks of your socks, and how ours are built for it.

What do tennis socks need on clay courts?

On clay, a tennis sock needs to keep your foot locked to the shoe while you slide, protect the toes and heel from friction at the end of each slide, cushion the extra time you spend on your feet in long rallies, and manage sweat. Crew height also helps keep fine clay dust away from the skin around your ankle.

What clay does to your feet

  • Sliding. At the end of every slide, your foot wants to keep going inside the shoe, pushing into the toes and the side of the shoe.
  • Long rallies. A slower surface means more shots per point and more time on your feet.
  • Grit. Fine clay dust finds its way into your shoes and adds abrasion where the shoe collar meets the skin.
  • Heat. Clay season runs into warm spring and summer afternoons.

How our tennis socks handle clay

A foot that slides with the shoe, not inside it

Active Arc compression on the arch and metatarsus, combined with our micro-slip grip design, keeps your foot connected to the shoe. The shoe slides on the court; your foot stays where it should. More on how metatarsus compression prevents micro-slips.

No seam where the slide ends

The seamless toe removes the friction point where your foot pushes forward as you brake. See how our tennis socks help prevent blisters.

Cushioning for long rallies

High-density padding under the heel and forefoot takes the load of extended baseline exchanges.

Coverage above the collar

Crew height and an extended cuff put fabric between your skin and the shoe collar, where clay grit tends to rub.

Bamboo for warm afternoons

The bamboo fibre blend is naturally breathable and helps manage sweat when the sun comes out.

Crew or Crew Lite on clay?

In spring, the Tennis Crew gives you the most cushioning and coverage. When summer heat arrives, switch to the Tennis Crew Lite for a lighter feel and more ventilation, with the same crew height. Low cut socks leave more skin exposed at the collar, so on clay we recommend crew height. Still deciding? Read Tennis Crew vs Crew Lite.

Getting the clay out

Shake out your shoes and socks after play, then wash your socks cold or at 30°C with a mild detergent. Skip bleach: it will not remove red clay and it weakens the fibres. Our full routine: how to wash and care for your bamboo socks.
